Dignity in Dying
(Voluntary Euthanasia Society)
|
The Voluntary Euthanasia Society was founded in 1935 by a group
of doctors who wanted to make it legal for an adult person
suffering severe distress from an incurable illness to receive
medical help to die at their own considered request.
The Society changed its name to "Dignity in Dying" in 2006.

I have learned from my life in medicine that death is not always
an enemy. Often it is good medical treatment. Often it achieves
what medicine cannot achieve -- it stops suffering.
Dr. Christian Barnard.
As euthanasia is a civil liberty and not something to be
imposed, it would only be available when requested by a patient
who has the mental capacity to understand the full significance
of the request at the time of making that request. Euthanasia is
also seen as voluntary on the other side in that medical and
other personnel would not be called upon to become involved if the
idea were against their convictions. However, in such
circumstances it would be obligatory for them to refer the
patient elsewhere.
