Religion: Bad and Irrational Parts of
- Reliance on supernatural beings to solve problems here in
this life.
- Silliness of expecting God to require worship.
- Psychological harm of making everyone feel sinful.
- The concept that one's own religion is the only true
religion, even though it should be obvious that one's own
religion depends to a high degree of probability on the religion
of one's parents and the culture one is brought up in.
- The idiotic idea that certain books are the sacred word of
God when it is patently obvious that they were written by men
with the feelings and concerns of men, particularly for the time
when they were written.
- Closing one's eyes to the contradictions of these books
(particularly the Christian Bible).
- And not just contradictions of fact, but contradictions of
theology; for example, "turn the other cheek" whilst God does
nothing of the sort in the old Testament but condemns whole
populations of people to death who happen to be "enemies" of the
chosen people.
- Ignoring the fact that God, as written about in the Old
Testament, is as
cruel and merciless as men.
- Belief in "miracles". If God can heal a person of some
difficult-to-prove ailment, why does he not do something really
spectacular like giving a new leg to an amputee?
- When going into battle, prayers are said for victory in the
belief that God is on our side. But if God were on our side, no
battle would be necessary. We could disarm unilaterally and God
would see to it that our enemy was vanquished (see Old Testament
for examples).
